County Mayo juts out proudly into the crashing North Atlantic and is without doubt one of Ireland’s best-kept secrets. Mayo or Maigh Eo as it is in Irish, translates as The Plain of the Yew Tree. Beautiful as this imagery is, it does not do anywhere near enough justice to the varied and visually stunning landscapes you will encounter here on Ireland’s west coast.
With this in mind, Pure Mayo is a brand new visitor guide to all that County Mayo has to offer. We aim to ensure that you capitalise on your trip to Mayo – and discover all that this region has to offer. Whether you are a seasoned visitor on your 12th trip or this is your very first time here, we feel certain that you will discover something new.
For ease of use, Pure Mayo has been divided into four colour-coded regions:
- Achill and Erris: Taking in Ireland’s largest off-shore island Achill, Belmullet town, the Blacksod Peninsula, the dramatic coastline of North Mayo and the protected Ballycroy National Park
- Clew Bay to Killary: A coastal region stretching from Mulranny village on the Northside down to Louisburgh on the Southern Shoreline of Clew Bay, meandering through the vibrant towns of Westport & Newport on the way.
- The Lake District and Plains of Mayo: Includes the county town of Castlebar, and also Ballinrobe, Cong, Claremorris, Kiltimagh, Knock and Ballyhaunis.
- The Moy Valley: The region focuses on the North Eastern area of the county from Killala on the coastline, through to Ireland’s Salmon capital Ballina, Foxford, Charlestown and Swinford.
