The Moy Valley

E-mail Print PDF

The Moy Valley, situated in the North-Eastern corner of County Mayo is ubiquitous with the Salmon - a creature featured in Irish mythology.  It was once believed that he who ate the Salmon of Knowledge would be bestowed with the gift of eternal wisdom.  Now we can no longer guarantee that if you are lucky enough to catch a fine salmon in the river Moy, you will be the recipient of great wisdom, but we can guarantee you great fun in your efforts.

Ballina is the centre of salmon-fishing in the Country and not a day will pass during the fishing season that you will not see at least one keen fisherman in waders in the River Moy.  However there is a lot more than fishing available here – Ballina is renowned locally for great shopping and a lively nightlife.

History buffs will find themselves spoilt for choice in this region –  From Kilcummin and Killala discover all about General Humbert and the short-lived Provisional Republic of Connacht; In Straide, Michael Davitt and The Land League and his influence on world leaders like Ghandi; Entrepreneurial nuns in Foxford whose efforts propelled locals out of abject poverty; the village of Lahardaun and how the sinking of the Titanic is the darkest day of the village’s history; The Harry Clark collection in Ballina town.  The Moy Valley is rich in historical heritage.

Also of interest are the traditional towns of Swinford and Charlestown – both now easily accessed on the ever-improving N5.   The village of Pontoon, straddling both Lough Conn and Lough Cullin and offering a wide choice of activities for the visitor to the area.  And finally not forgetting the Fr. Peyton Memorial Centre in Attymass – a lasting tribute to the Irish priest who became known internationally as ‘The Rosary Priest’.
